About CMERI

The Central Mechanical Engineering Research Institute (CMERI) is the largest mechanical engineering research and development institute in India under the aegis of the Council of Scientific & Industrial Research (CSIR).

Established in 1958, CMERI has been at the forefront of mechanical engineering innovation, serving as a vital resource for industry and government. Our campus spans over 100 acres in Durgapur, West Bengal, housing state-of-the-art laboratories, testing facilities, and pilot plants.

We focus on translational research that bridges the gap between academic discovery and industrial application. Our work spans advanced manufacturing, robotics, energy systems, automotive engineering, and sustainable technologies.

Development of a fully indigenous 6-axis articulated robot for manufacturing applications. The project aims to reduce India's dependency on imported industrial robots.

Status: Completed prototype testing, commercialization phase initiated.

Partners: Tata Motors, Bharat Forge, Ministry of Heavy Industries

Budget: ₹85 crores (approximately $10.2 million)

Design and deployment of efficient solar-powered irrigation pumps for agricultural use in rural India. Over 5,000 units deployed across 12 states.

Impact: Reduced diesel consumption by 3.2 million liters annually, benefiting 15,000+ farmers.

Recognition: National Energy Conservation Award 2022

Research on carbon fiber reinforced polymers and ceramic matrix composites for next-generation aerospace applications in collaboration with ISRO and HAL.

Achievement: Developed composite material with 40% weight reduction compared to aluminum alloys.

Researchers at CMERI have successfully developed and tested a 2 MW gearless wind turbine that reduces maintenance costs by 40% and improves efficiency by 15% compared to conventional designs. The technology has been transferred to Suzlon Energy for commercialization.
